Ruapehu and Rafting

Work was tough getting back into after our amazing holiday away, however, we didnt have long to wait until we got back to the fun. So at the weekend we headed down to the mountain with Gem & James, Andy & Em (friends of friends who have recently moved to Auckland), Gem (one of James' friends from home) and Helen (one of our friends from Hamilton) we arrived late on Friday evening and unfortunately Gem and the Auckland crew arrived later after their friends' car broke down 28 miles south of Auckland, after having only had it for 17hours - took them about 2 hours to get it back to theirs to pick up a different car. Anyway, they arrived around 1.30am and we all headed pretty much straight to bed.

The next morning we awoke to nice weather and headed straight up the mountain - unfortunately we had to turn around and head to the other side of the mountain after learning that it was closed for high winds. By the time we made it to the other side, the weather had closed in and it was raining with poor visibility. So, we decided to hire out some snow boards, book some lessons and have a laugh - which we definitely did. Although the conditions were horrendous, we had an amazing day and ALOT of fun. That afternoon we were joined by more friends of friends, had some apres ski drink before heading back to the bach for food, drinks and games.

On Sunday the conditions were horrendous again (which we knew they would be) so we had booked to go white water rafting in Turangi. A fantastic day and great rafting fun. Got pretty cold by the end but was all worth it.

All in all a fantastic weekend. Cant wait for the next.

Queenstown!

After only 2 weeks of work we were back on our next holiday.... down to the snow in Queenstown, on the South Island.
Friday, after finishing work at 9pm we packed our bags ready for an early start. Our flight took of at 10am from a very rainy, miserable Auckland and arrived in a beautifully sunny Queenstown at around midday, which gave us the rest of the afternoon to play with. We found our hostel and picked up some burgerfuel burgers and frisbees and headed over to the park for a spot of frisbee golf! Such a great idea and a really fun way to spend a few hours in the sun. Unfortunately Si beat me, but it wasn't totally unexpected. After the frisbee golf we treated ourselves to the perfect hot chocolate at patagonia before hitting the drinks, that evening we had the first of many lovely meals out followed by many drinks.

The next day we woke to beautiful weather and headed up to The Remarkables, one of Queenstowns ski fields. Was a beautiful day and pretty great ski conditions - could do with having a few more cm's of fresh snow, but otherwise perfect, stayed up all day and headed down after the last lift, to enjoy another evening of good food and booze. Monday was another perfect day so this time we decided to try out Coronet Peak, Queenstown's other ski field (and our favourite of the 2) Could well have been our best day....very few people, no waiting for ski lifts, pretty much empty slopes....so therefore able to cain it down at full speed....yeeeeaaaa

Unfortunately Tuesday saw the weather turn and the day started with rain and miserableness...so decided to have a lazy day with a nice lie in and a late brunch, followed by the NEVIS ARC...300m canyon swing, I expected more of a stomach lurch, but was pretty ace. That evening, good food, good booze....you get the picture!

Wednesday we headed back to Coronet peak, unfortunately the weather closed in after 30mins of being up the mountain and didn't clear for a good few hours, and even then it was only for about an hour....got pretty miserable up there what with flat light and only being able to see about 20m infront of you. By 2pm we were ready to call it a day and headed back down in time to head over to the airport to pick up our rental car. That evening we headed over to Arrowtown, where we had an AMAZING curry and went to my favorite cinema to watch cemetery junction - a really funny movie produced by Ricky Gervais - definitely recommended!

Thursday we got up really early and headed over to Treble Cone, one of Wanaka's ski fields, and meant to be the most challenging ski field on the South Island. Well, it was definitely a challenge as the visibility was pretty poor until about 2pm when it cleared, plus half of their blue runs would definitely be blacks anywhere else - as for the black runs.... That evening we went for a lovely Thai meal.

Friday we went back to TC to enjoy it in the BEAUTIFUl weather that we had...such a great day - perfect conditions, with even some fresh snow! Stayed up on the mountain for the whole day (as this was or last day on the mountain)
That evening we went to another cute cinema (the famous paradiso cinema) where we watched knight and day (crap movie) but we watched in the comfort of a CAR!!! so cool!

That was our last evening in Wanaka, the next day we headed back to Queenstown, via puzzling world - really cool place, but unfortunately its the same as it was 5 years ago so I remembered most of it, thought they might have updated it more. The maze was cool though and took us over half an hour to find our way out! That afternoon we headed back to drop of the car before going for a nice walk along the lake. Our final evening was spent at another lovely restaurant.

Sunday we headed back to home after a lazy morning in Queenstown....what a great holiday.

Week of work

So, I dont really have much to add about the last week. I have been catching up work after my week of in Samoa. Although the weekend was spent in work it was still a good one. I got Friday morning off and Gem came down from Auckland to spend the day with me, we had a lovely brunch together before we headed back to hospital for my teaching (she was a little geeky and decided to join me). That evening James joined us and we headed out bowling with some of my work crew followed by a good curry and some drinks.
The next day Si and James were first up and headed down to the mountain to check out the snow, Gem was up next to drive up to Auckland to work and finally I got up to go to work...By the time I got home from work, Si and James were back, we headed out to get some pizza's before settling in to watch the rugby.
Was back in work the next day - but cant really complain, they're only 9 hour shifts rather than the usual 14 hr weekend days, plus I enjoy my work so all good.

Anyway, back for another weeks work (evenings, which sucks a bit) before heading to QUEENSTOWN!

Saaaaamoa

Friday evening after getting home from my evening of work was spent packing for our holidays. After packing up all our stuff we headed to bed ready for an early night.
Getting up at 4am on Saturday proved quite difficult, but was slightly eased by the holiday excitement. So, after driving the hour and a half to the airport we checked in and sorted ourselves our for some brekky.
The flight to Samoa was about 3 1/2 hours, but as we crossed the date line we actually arrived in Samoa at midday on Friday - cool hey! After arriving we headed over to the wharf to catch the ferry over to Savaii, the bigger, but less populated of the 2 main islands. Our hotel/beach resort (not resorts as we know in Europe) was about a 20 minute taxi ride from the wharf and was beautiful, set amongst palm trees and tropical garden it is across the road from the reef lined lagoon and beach....perfect. We had booked one of the more expensive villas(mainly because that was all that was left when we booked), but it did mean we had an amazing private outdoor shower (my favourite bit...and it came with 2 king sized beds, incase Si pissed me off!)
The rest of the afternoon/evening was spent drinking cocktails at the in-pool bar and having a lovely barbeque dinner with live Samoan music. We attempted to watch the tri-nations rugby that night but got the timing all wrong and ended up missing it - doh.

Saturday we headed to the local market with Elizabeth, the hotel's guest relations manager who showed us around and introduced us to some of the local food. Really nice trip and a great way to interact with the locals. She also introduced us to the local bus etiquette, which soon became our preferred mode of transport. After that we joined her and her husband to watch the rugby, regional matches, not quite the same as the stand we are used to watching regional matches in New Zealand but a better back drop! That evening was spent having dinner at the hotel's restaurant (not going to win any awards, but nice enough) with a few beers before heading back to our room.

Sunday we had a nice lie-in and respected the islands very Christian beliefs by having a day of rest. We spent the day mainly lazing around the pool and doing very little - that afternoon we took our snorkels to the lagoon and had a play around out there. The lagoon was amazing, like a giant swimming pool. We swam probably just shy of a km to the reef before deciding we should probably think about getting back in. Visibility was a bit variable but the further out we got the better it got and the fishes were so cool!

Monday we decided to hire a car to explore the island, we picked up the car around midday and headed south, we stopped off at an old waterfall that no longer had a waterfall as the chiefs of the land above the water fall had a fight with the village at the bottom and decided to dam it - that showed them!! After the waterfall we stopped at some pretty viewing points before stopping to see the blow-holes. Pretty cool really, one of the old dudes that lives there grabs some coconuts and throws them into the blowholes just before the spew! AFter that we grabbed a quick bite to eat before moving on to the next. Our next stop was the beach at the far west of the island. The last place in the world to see the sun set. The thing that annoyed us about this little trip was that everyplace you stop for more than 2 mins, you get a local come and tell you that they want money for us to be there - and its not just a few quid either, one placed asked for the equivalent of £10 just to stand on the beach - little bit crazy - but you can see why they do it if it works! Unfortunately we didn't get to stay to watch the sun set, we needed start heading back, plus the clouds were rolling in, so probably wouldn't have been that much of a sunset anyway. On our way back, we decided to stop at one of the more up market resorts on the northern side of the island, unfortunatley we were not really dressed appropriately for the place, but what the heck...was an amazing meal, easily our best on Savaii. By the time we got back to our resort, we were suitably knackered, but managed a beer or 2 before bed!

On Tuesday, we still had the car till midday so we got up early and headed north back to see the turtles, we expected this to be a really expensive, well set up tourist trap, but we were wrong - it was a family who owned basically an enormous pond extended from the river, where they kept the turtles, it was deep enough that we could get in and have a swim with them. Unfortunately it was chucking it down with rain at the time so the visibility wasn't great, but it was still pretty cool, and a great opportunity to use my underwater camera. After that we headed back to drop off the car and then lounged by the pool for a few hours. That afternoon, Elizabeth had arranged for us to have a tour of a local village. Was a great tours, led by one of the members of the village, she took us to her home which was incredible, it was very outdoor, open plan living with a different hut as a different room of the house, she also took us into her plantation, where her son Ien showed us how he fetched the coconuts for the family, climbing to the top in less than 10seconds - phenomenol. That evening, we decided to try out a different resaurant on the island, which didn't turn out to be all that great, but good trying a different place anyway.

Wednesday we had a lazy day by the pool, good weather and a good book was all I wanted, and it delivered on both of those. That evening we went on a little trip to one of the plantations where they showed us all the different fruit and veg they grow and how they work and live in the plantations, really interesting and some lovely people.

Thursday was our last day on Savaii and Elizabeth invited us to her village for the day. She lives in a village about 3 down from the resort. Her story is really interesting, she was born and brought up in Sydney, but her father is Samoan, she always dreamt of heading back to Samoa for a simpler life. About 1 year ago when she was 28 she headed over and in less than a year she has settled into Island life and married a Samoan man (who played professional rugby in New Zealand before heading home to look after his widowed mum) cute story really and a fascinating couple. There home is amazing, and every night they go to their beach fale to sleep, imagine waking up every morning on the beach with a view of the lagoon....awesome! So, after spending the afternoon on their beach, we headed back to our resort for a fia fia night which all the staff put on for us, complete with Samoan dancing and the national fire dancing champion performing for us, oh and a barbeque and cocktails!

On Friday we got up early and headed down to the wharf to catch our ferry back to Upolo, the main island, unfortunately, although the weather was nice, the sea was rough, and there were alot of sick passengers on board......However, I did get to see a whale which was pretty cool! After arriving on Upolo, we caught to bus to Apia to Aggie Greys, the most famous hotel on Samoa, and I think we were the youngest people there by at least 20years! That afternoon we headed into town to buy a few bits and pieces before grabbing our snorkels and heading to the deep sea marine reserve. This was really cool, visibility was good and there were so many fish! Got a little over excited with the underwater camera there! That evening we found a really nice restaurant down the road and made a bit of an evening of it, before heading back to our hotel room in time to watch the All Black thrash the Wallabies in another awesome rugby match.

Sunday we woke up to rain - we attempted to find the bus to take us to the sliding rocks but then the storm blew in. A proper tropical storm - we got absolutely soaked on our return back to the hotel and didn't manage to make it out at all. Not a great end to the holiday but never mind, We managed to have a lovely last meal that night before heading to the airport at 11pm for our flight home. Unfortunately, we didn't think our flights through properly and had arranged to arrive back in Auckland at 4.30am in time to drive down to Hamilton to start work at 8am. Obviously not thought through, especially since our flight was delayed, our shuttle bus didn't turn up and I ended up an hour late for work.....oh and to top it off, the person I was due to be with that morning was the boss....nice one Sallie, oh well what can you do.

So, all in all, a great holiday. Looking forward to the next one......in 2 weeks to Queenstown skiing - YEY!!!

Moving house

Again, a late blog, sorry.

After having a lovely weekend down at the mountain I faced a 12 day stretch at work, which to be honest isn't horrendous as I'm actually enjoying what I'm doing. The week was spent packing and boxing all of our stuff ready for the move on Monday. Realised just how much I hate packing and moving house, and really thought that this would be the 1st time I didn't have to move house every year - oh well. Oh, and to add misery to if this time I had furniture to move!

So, whilst I worked the weekend, Si continued to pack our stuff like a good boy and on Monday the real hard work began. I spent the morning picking up the keys and the van and moving some boxes and stuff. Over the next day or 2 Si and I (mainly Si) moved our life to our new home. I have to give enormous credit to Si, he did the majority of the moving and was AMAZING. Also have to give big thanks to a friend of ours who helped Si move the furniture.

Anyway, now moved into the new house and really happy with it. Looking forward to living here.

Back to the mountain

Sorry this has all taken so long to update. Been a really bust few weeks and have not really had a chance to sit down and update the blog.

On Friday 9th July we headed back down to Ruapehu to enjoy another weekend on the snow. So after driving the 2.5hrs we arrived at another lovely bach in National Park (we were lucky to get it after someone cancelled last minute). We grabbed some food from the supermarket on the way down for our dinner, and just after cracking open a few of the beers we were joined by 2 friends Orlaith and Helen. That evening we just had a quiet few beers with a few card games before retiring for the night.

Saturday we awoke to a beautiful day, had a quick bacon butty and headed up the mountain. Although the weather was amazing, the other side of the mountain was shut for high winds so everyone all joined the Whakapapa side. Unfortunately this meant that it was absolutely rammed. Still a great day though and we stayed out till the last lift. However, unfortunately on the last lift mine and Si's boots somehow caught on each others which meant that when we got of the lift and tried to go separate directions my knee got really badly twisted. Still suffering from it now, should probably go and get it checked out, actually talking of which, i'll book an appointment. Also, right after that Helen had a horrendous fall which ruled her out of skiing the next day!

That evening, fully broken, we retired in the pub. After having a nice dinner we settled down to watch the first tri-nations rugby match - and what a match, probably the best game of rugby I have EVER seen, it had everything (including an exposure of one of the All-Blacks bottoms) So so good and a great start to the season by the All Blacks.

On Sunday Helen and Orlaith heade back home as Helen was so broken she could barely walk, we on the other hand attempted the mountain again, probably a little foolish on my sore knee, but I took it easy and it was a beautiful day and much quieter than the day before.

At lift closure we headed back up to Hamilton ready to start work the next day and face the packing saga of moving house.....

skiiinggg!! Yea

This weekend felt like our first real trip down to the mountain.
Headed down Friday lunchtime as Si, Gem and I managed to get the day off (unfortunately I came down ill on Thursday night so wasn't feeling that up for it). Met James and Laura at Turoa ski field at around 2.30 and decided to catch the last hour or so on the mountain. Beautiful day, sun shining, enough snow to play.... perfect.
That evening we lit the log burner, got some nice food and wine and had a cosy night in playing cards and games. Saturday morning we awoke to a cloudy day and headed up to Whakapapa (pronounced Fakapapa) to check out the conditions. Luckily the cloud just circled the mountain, and was below the snow level so we enjoyed yet another beautiful day. By the end of the day we did need to do quite a bit of rock dodging and my ski's have now become a pair of rock skis but never mind, all worth it. Saturday night we were joined by one of my work friends, Rich with his wife and 18mth old. Had a nice meal in Schnapps bar followed by another lovely evening in.
Sunday morning we woke to another great day and headed back up the mountain. Got another great day of skiing in before heading back home. Dont think the winter will be so bad if I can spend it like this!
