Coromandel again!

So we decided to head back to one of our favourite places in New Zealand....COOKS BEACH!
Myself, Si, Jen and Sonia headed over on friday evening after work, stopped at a supermarket for supplies and arrived at Cooks beach at around 8pm. After chucking a few things on the BBQ we had a relatively chilled evening with a few glasses of wone.
The next day we headed over to Cathedral cove loaded with beach games and plenty of sunscreen. Spent the best part of the day chilling on the beach, playing games and swimming in the sea. Gem, James, Bea and Em joined us around 3.30pm after saving lives on the roads of NZ (they came across a motorcycle accident on the road) Spent another hour or so on the beach before heading back to Cooks beach to join Sonia who'd stayed back at the bach to work.
After getting back to the bach we all went down to Cooks beach with a few beers and had a lovely evening swim and chillout.
That night we had another BBQ before an alcohol fueled games evening.

Sunday we headed out and our 1st stop was at an amazingly picturesque vineyard, where we had a great wine tasting then over to Hahei to have a nice brunch followed by snorkelling at Gemstone bay. After snorkelling we chilled out on the beach together before heading back home.x

Fun in the Waikato region!

Our evening started with a quick nip over to Raglan to check out the surf. Got lucky this time and it was pretty good! Unfortunately we could only stay an hour as we had to get back to Hamilton as Gem, James and Bea were heading down to spend the weekend with me. Kicked the weekend off with a relaxing evening with a curry and a movie.

Saturday we had a leisurely start and then headed down to Te Kuiti to try climbing outdoors. Unfortunately Si was working so couldn't join us. Luckily we had 2 friends that are already climbers with their own gear that could show us the ropes (literally!) Turned out to be a fantastic day. Beautiful day, great company and a fantastic introduction to climbing (I even got a lead clmb in!)
Saturday evening we headed into town for a thai curry (2 curries in a row!!) then out for a few (too many) drinkies!

Sunday was again a leisurely start, but we finally got ourselves up and over to Raglan. After going for a nice brunch in town we headed to the beach to play games and have a surf. Unfortunately, due to the day being another scorcher we couldn't play our games on the sand as the black sand became burning hot - so we played in the sea instead - gutted!

Another great weekend,xxx

Waiheke

Somehow managed to not be working Friday evening which was great because it meant that I was free to head up to Auckland after work with Si and Fi to have another weekend away.Gem had arranged Friday eveing and we had a great night with a BBQ which turned into a great night out in Ponsenby, Auckland.

On Saturday we woke up feeling absolutely rotten, but considering we had booked accomodation on Waiheke (which we had to check into by 1pm) we had to get up and out. After having paracetamol, ibuprofen, juice and a shower and not feeling any better we realised this was gonna be a bad hangover day. So around 11am myself, Gem, Bea and Fi headed down to the wharf to catch the midday ferry to Waiheke, after feasting on an entirely needed Maccys we camped out on the top deck to see if the sea breeze helped.....it didn't!! After arriving on Waiheke we got a taxi (with a MENTAL) taxi driver to the hostel, where we dropped off our kit and headed straight to the beach, where we stayed ALL day! (bar myself and Bea going for a small shop and ice cream hunt). After monging on the beach we headed back to the hostel for a quick shower before heading out for dinner. Had a turkish dinner which was AMAZING and the wine went down surprisingly well!

Sunday we woke to an overcast day and headed into the small town/village for breakfast. While at breakfast the weather cleared up nicely and was soon clear skies and a scorcher. That sealed the deal for kayaking and we headed down to the kayak centre to hire a kayaks for a few hours. Absolutely stunning scenery, amazing coastline. Even got to pull up in a small bay and have a quick swim and a nice walk. After our kayak we headed back to the ferry to head back over to Auckland. We had a lovely fish BBQ before heading to our next activity, climbing. By 8.30pm I was suitably knackered and Fi and I headed back down to Hamilton.

Another FAB weekend.

Up North!

Friday night started in work with an evening shift. After finishing at 9pm I waited till Si finished at 11pm then headed up to Auckland to Gem's. We arrived around 12.30am ish and Gem arrived soon after, having finishing work at 1am. We had a quick catch up and then headed to bed.

Friday morning we awoke reasonably early and I headed over to the Airport to pick up Bea who had just arrived in New Zealand. From there we headed up north to Matakana/Goat Island for the weekend. Stopped off at Matakana 1st for a quick bite to eat and a mosey around the shops, then headed to the campsite to pitch our tent before heading to the beach for the rest of the afternoon. Managed to perfect (well, kinda) my skim boarding skill - thanks Tom and Loz, great pressy. That evening we went back to Matakana for dinner and then played some cranium back at the campsite (we ARE hardcore!)

Sunday we woke to an amazing day and headed off with our snorkel gear to check out the marine reserve. Despite the sea being REALLY cold, had a great time and saw loads of fishys. After snorlkelling we went for a nice lunch then headed to another beach for the rest of the afternoon where we played volleyball, rugby and a bit of frisbee.

After that we headed back to Auckland for a quick bite to eat before heading back home.
Thanks guys.x

Home

So going home started off with Awkward hassel with panic over my expiring passport, which turned out to absolutely fine which was annoying considering I paid for flights down to Wellington to sort it out.

The flight started off well, with a surprise cake from our travel agent then turned to chaos as we were unexpectedly called upon to give medical assistance to a sick passenger, IV access obtained, drugs given, 2 diverts cancelled and a confiscated bottle of champagne made up the rest of our journey home, needless to say we were happy when we arrived back....and to sunshine in Manchester!!!

The trip home was spent dotting between Manchester, Liverpool and Chester seeing some of my most favourite people.
A quick summary:

The first few days that I was home I spent with Mum and Dad, going for some nice meals and having some great days out in and around the Chester area, including spending a RIDICULOUS amount of money. I also managed to squeeze in a visit to see my grandma who is unfortunately very poorly in hospital :( hopefully on the mend now though.

The first weekend I was in Manchester with Tom, Lauren and Helen being spoilt by all things British, including the food and wine festival at Tatton, high tea at the lowry and walks around some of the amazing parks and the pride and predudice national park house.

The next week I was between Liverpool and Chester seeing Helen, Esther and Lucy as well as a few days with Mum and Si (bro) and Pip. Friday night I went back over to Liverpool for a Whiston reunion. Was amazing to see everyone again after so long, nice to know friendships dont change!

The final weekend was spent with Laura and Byron who came up to visit me which was amazing, I showed them a few of the Liverpool sights before heading out to meet up with the hockey girls. Cant say enough how amazing it was to see everyone again. Also, it was great to hear all about Esthers up coming wedding, which unfortunately I cant make it to!

So, all in all a very busy fortnight. Sorry to all those people I couldn't see, there were some definite big gaps and I hope that I can see you all next time I'm back, will try not to make it so brief!

Turangi

A last minute weekend plan, which turned out to be a great one. Found out that a few of the guys we've met from Auckland and Wellington were meeting in Turangi. Headed down late Friday night after finishing work and arrived at around midnight, just in time for a few drinks before bed. The next morning we awoke to a beautiful day and after having bacon butties on the balcony and making our sarnies in the sun we headed to the kayak centre, which happened to be a house with a small river at the back. After putting the kayaks in the river we started on our little kayak adventure to lake Taupo. Was so perfect, kayaking past fields and natural thermal pools and even people back yard. Was so serene, although slightly disturbed by the kayak water fights. On arriving at lake Taupo it seemed like a perfect place to pull up, have lunch and throw a rugby ball around. After lunch we had a reshuffle and Em and I shared a double kayak. Up till this point Gem had stayed nice and dry as she was carrying the lunch. We decided to get revenge and after attempting to capsize Gem's kayak, me and Em ended up in after her....oops!

After kayaking we decided to head to the hot pools to chill for a while. They were the hottest hot pools I've ever been in but a great way to chill out in the sun before heading back to the bach for our BBQ. That evening we decided to get incredibly drunk and play drinking games - think Gem came off worse!

Sunday was unfortunately miserable weather so we decided to head into Taurangi. Turns out there's not much to do in bad weather so we had a nice relaxed brunch and play a round of mini golf in the rain before heading back home.

Great weekend, thanks Di and Ash for organising it.x

Skiing and Rotorua

This weekend we decided to head down to the mountain. The sun was shining and the forcast good. Gem, Mum, Dad and Si (bro) had been on the South Island for the past week and weren't landing till around 7pm, so James headed down to Hamilton after work, and after picking Si (bf) up from work at 9pm we headed down to National Park (ski village) we all arrived together late Fri eve. After a drink and a catch up we decided to head to bed ready to get up about 6 hours later to head to the mountain.

Saturday was a beautiful day with the sun beating down - true spring conditions. Unfortunately it seemed the whole of the North Island had the same idea to head down and catch the last of the snow and it was really busy. Still, a great day and nice to ski with my bro again and pick up a few technique tips. After skiing we headed to the pub where we stayed for most of the evening, after being suitably tanked we headed back to the bach for a few more drinks and some games before bed.

Sunday we decided to head to rotorua, as Si wanted to see a bit more of NZ with us. So we took him to Rotorua. 1st stop kerosene creek natural geothermal hot springs with a nice picnic. After that we headed to Te Puia, the see the famous geysers, bubbling mud pools and steaming vents. After Te Puia we headed to the Zorb center where they finally allowed 3 in a zorb again. I made the slightly regretted decision to get in with the 2 Si's. Dont think I came off worst though after seeing the cracking bruise on bro's chest. Next we headed to the agroadventure centre where we achieved our ultimate goal - getting mum do to the 49m swoop with the 2 boys! Not sure she really knew what she was getting herself into - you should have seen her face on the close ups - classic.

After the adventure thrill we headed back to Hamilton, stopping briefly in Tirau, the home of the corrugated iron (everything made out of corrugated iron, including a shops in the shape of a large shhep and a large dog - little bit nuts). Once back in Hamilton, we went for a quick walk around the lake before heading into town for an AMAZING meal at one of our favorite restaurants.

This morning I headed to work but Si, Si, Mum and Dad headed over to Raglan for the morning before they headed over to the East coast for some wine tasting.

Great weekend!

Mum, Dad and Si

So, after finding out I had Friday off, I decided to head up to Auckland to see Mum, Dad and Si when the arrive in NZ. Unfortunately I couldn't pick them up from the Airport but I got to Gem and James' house just after they did and surprised them there. To attempt to keep them awake we headed into Mt Eden, although they decided to have a few drinks in one of the nice bars (maybe that wasn't the best idea in keeping them awake). When Gem finished work she joined us for a glass of wine before we headed back to hers for the evening. That evening was pretty sedate and Gem cooked a cracking lasagne before Mum, Dad and Si finally crashed at 9pm.

Saturday we got up early (thanks to their jet lag) and Gem, Mum and I went off for a nice brunch in Mt Eden before going wedding dress shopping for Gem's big day. Went to one shit hole that we had to make our excuses and leave, then one beautiful place, followed by a good bridal shop (very similar to a bridal fair but in a shop) we came up with the design of the invitations and finally feel like we've made progress with the plans (and my first chance to feel like a really bridesmaid). The boys all headed off to Waiheke for the day for a male bonding session. They went to a few vineyards and by the sounds of things had a really great day. Saturday evening we went out for a lovely meal together.

Sunday we went for a really nice brunch up sky tower and got lucky to have lovely weather up there. That afternnon we went for a nice walk up Mt Eden to see the beautiful views before Gem, Si (bro), Mum and Dad headed to the airport to fly down to the South Island for a few days.

ruapehu again

So, this weekend we decided to head back down to the mountain. Unfortunately there weren't many people around to go, so myself Si and Fiona headed down together. On arriving we headed straight to the pub for some food and drinks before heading to bed for an early start the next day.
We knew that we would only get one day skiing as the weather was forcast to close in on Sunday, so we made to most of Saturday. Up early and on the mountain by 8.15. Had a lovely breakfast up the mountain before catching one of the 1st lifts up. Really nice day up there and pretty good conditions. (especially after it softened up a little) After having an apres ski drink we headed back down to our accommodation before settling in at the pub for the evening. That evening we watched the final tri nations match All Blacks v Springboks. After 3/4 of the match, Fi and I were so knackered we headed to bed only to find out later that Fi won the guess the score and $120.

Sunday we got up to terrible weather, looked out the window and you would have had no idea that there were massive mountains right on the doorstep. After a few nice walks around the area we collected his winnings and headed up to Taupo to meet Nat and Jason for lunch. After lunch we headed back to Hamilton for a bit of a lazy evening.

Unfortunately I'm working next weekend so not doing anything too exciting till the week after.

Ruapehu and Rafting

Work was tough getting back into after our amazing holiday away, however, we didnt have long to wait until we got back to the fun. So at the weekend we headed down to the mountain with Gem & James, Andy & Em (friends of friends who have recently moved to Auckland), Gem (one of James' friends from home) and Helen (one of our friends from Hamilton) we arrived late on Friday evening and unfortunately Gem and the Auckland crew arrived later after their friends' car broke down 28 miles south of Auckland, after having only had it for 17hours - took them about 2 hours to get it back to theirs to pick up a different car. Anyway, they arrived around 1.30am and we all headed pretty much straight to bed.

The next morning we awoke to nice weather and headed straight up the mountain - unfortunately we had to turn around and head to the other side of the mountain after learning that it was closed for high winds. By the time we made it to the other side, the weather had closed in and it was raining with poor visibility. So, we decided to hire out some snow boards, book some lessons and have a laugh - which we definitely did. Although the conditions were horrendous, we had an amazing day and ALOT of fun. That afternoon we were joined by more friends of friends, had some apres ski drink before heading back to the bach for food, drinks and games.

On Sunday the conditions were horrendous again (which we knew they would be) so we had booked to go white water rafting in Turangi. A fantastic day and great rafting fun. Got pretty cold by the end but was all worth it.

All in all a fantastic weekend. Cant wait for the next.

Queenstown!

After only 2 weeks of work we were back on our next holiday.... down to the snow in Queenstown, on the South Island.
Friday, after finishing work at 9pm we packed our bags ready for an early start. Our flight took of at 10am from a very rainy, miserable Auckland and arrived in a beautifully sunny Queenstown at around midday, which gave us the rest of the afternoon to play with. We found our hostel and picked up some burgerfuel burgers and frisbees and headed over to the park for a spot of frisbee golf! Such a great idea and a really fun way to spend a few hours in the sun. Unfortunately Si beat me, but it wasn't totally unexpected. After the frisbee golf we treated ourselves to the perfect hot chocolate at patagonia before hitting the drinks, that evening we had the first of many lovely meals out followed by many drinks.

The next day we woke to beautiful weather and headed up to The Remarkables, one of Queenstowns ski fields. Was a beautiful day and pretty great ski conditions - could do with having a few more cm's of fresh snow, but otherwise perfect, stayed up all day and headed down after the last lift, to enjoy another evening of good food and booze. Monday was another perfect day so this time we decided to try out Coronet Peak, Queenstown's other ski field (and our favourite of the 2) Could well have been our best day....very few people, no waiting for ski lifts, pretty much empty slopes....so therefore able to cain it down at full speed....yeeeeaaaa

Unfortunately Tuesday saw the weather turn and the day started with rain and miserableness...so decided to have a lazy day with a nice lie in and a late brunch, followed by the NEVIS ARC...300m canyon swing, I expected more of a stomach lurch, but was pretty ace. That evening, good food, good booze....you get the picture!

Wednesday we headed back to Coronet peak, unfortunately the weather closed in after 30mins of being up the mountain and didn't clear for a good few hours, and even then it was only for about an hour....got pretty miserable up there what with flat light and only being able to see about 20m infront of you. By 2pm we were ready to call it a day and headed back down in time to head over to the airport to pick up our rental car. That evening we headed over to Arrowtown, where we had an AMAZING curry and went to my favorite cinema to watch cemetery junction - a really funny movie produced by Ricky Gervais - definitely recommended!

Thursday we got up really early and headed over to Treble Cone, one of Wanaka's ski fields, and meant to be the most challenging ski field on the South Island. Well, it was definitely a challenge as the visibility was pretty poor until about 2pm when it cleared, plus half of their blue runs would definitely be blacks anywhere else - as for the black runs.... That evening we went for a lovely Thai meal.

Friday we went back to TC to enjoy it in the BEAUTIFUl weather that we had...such a great day - perfect conditions, with even some fresh snow! Stayed up on the mountain for the whole day (as this was or last day on the mountain)
That evening we went to another cute cinema (the famous paradiso cinema) where we watched knight and day (crap movie) but we watched in the comfort of a CAR!!! so cool!

That was our last evening in Wanaka, the next day we headed back to Queenstown, via puzzling world - really cool place, but unfortunately its the same as it was 5 years ago so I remembered most of it, thought they might have updated it more. The maze was cool though and took us over half an hour to find our way out! That afternoon we headed back to drop of the car before going for a nice walk along the lake. Our final evening was spent at another lovely restaurant.

Sunday we headed back to home after a lazy morning in Queenstown....what a great holiday.

Week of work

So, I dont really have much to add about the last week. I have been catching up work after my week of in Samoa. Although the weekend was spent in work it was still a good one. I got Friday morning off and Gem came down from Auckland to spend the day with me, we had a lovely brunch together before we headed back to hospital for my teaching (she was a little geeky and decided to join me). That evening James joined us and we headed out bowling with some of my work crew followed by a good curry and some drinks.
The next day Si and James were first up and headed down to the mountain to check out the snow, Gem was up next to drive up to Auckland to work and finally I got up to go to work...By the time I got home from work, Si and James were back, we headed out to get some pizza's before settling in to watch the rugby.
Was back in work the next day - but cant really complain, they're only 9 hour shifts rather than the usual 14 hr weekend days, plus I enjoy my work so all good.

Anyway, back for another weeks work (evenings, which sucks a bit) before heading to QUEENSTOWN!

Saaaaamoa

Friday evening after getting home from my evening of work was spent packing for our holidays. After packing up all our stuff we headed to bed ready for an early night.
Getting up at 4am on Saturday proved quite difficult, but was slightly eased by the holiday excitement. So, after driving the hour and a half to the airport we checked in and sorted ourselves our for some brekky.
The flight to Samoa was about 3 1/2 hours, but as we crossed the date line we actually arrived in Samoa at midday on Friday - cool hey! After arriving we headed over to the wharf to catch the ferry over to Savaii, the bigger, but less populated of the 2 main islands. Our hotel/beach resort (not resorts as we know in Europe) was about a 20 minute taxi ride from the wharf and was beautiful, set amongst palm trees and tropical garden it is across the road from the reef lined lagoon and beach....perfect. We had booked one of the more expensive villas(mainly because that was all that was left when we booked), but it did mean we had an amazing private outdoor shower (my favourite bit...and it came with 2 king sized beds, incase Si pissed me off!)
The rest of the afternoon/evening was spent drinking cocktails at the in-pool bar and having a lovely barbeque dinner with live Samoan music. We attempted to watch the tri-nations rugby that night but got the timing all wrong and ended up missing it - doh.

Saturday we headed to the local market with Elizabeth, the hotel's guest relations manager who showed us around and introduced us to some of the local food. Really nice trip and a great way to interact with the locals. She also introduced us to the local bus etiquette, which soon became our preferred mode of transport. After that we joined her and her husband to watch the rugby, regional matches, not quite the same as the stand we are used to watching regional matches in New Zealand but a better back drop! That evening was spent having dinner at the hotel's restaurant (not going to win any awards, but nice enough) with a few beers before heading back to our room.

Sunday we had a nice lie-in and respected the islands very Christian beliefs by having a day of rest. We spent the day mainly lazing around the pool and doing very little - that afternoon we took our snorkels to the lagoon and had a play around out there. The lagoon was amazing, like a giant swimming pool. We swam probably just shy of a km to the reef before deciding we should probably think about getting back in. Visibility was a bit variable but the further out we got the better it got and the fishes were so cool!

Monday we decided to hire a car to explore the island, we picked up the car around midday and headed south, we stopped off at an old waterfall that no longer had a waterfall as the chiefs of the land above the water fall had a fight with the village at the bottom and decided to dam it - that showed them!! After the waterfall we stopped at some pretty viewing points before stopping to see the blow-holes. Pretty cool really, one of the old dudes that lives there grabs some coconuts and throws them into the blowholes just before the spew! AFter that we grabbed a quick bite to eat before moving on to the next. Our next stop was the beach at the far west of the island. The last place in the world to see the sun set. The thing that annoyed us about this little trip was that everyplace you stop for more than 2 mins, you get a local come and tell you that they want money for us to be there - and its not just a few quid either, one placed asked for the equivalent of £10 just to stand on the beach - little bit crazy - but you can see why they do it if it works! Unfortunately we didn't get to stay to watch the sun set, we needed start heading back, plus the clouds were rolling in, so probably wouldn't have been that much of a sunset anyway. On our way back, we decided to stop at one of the more up market resorts on the northern side of the island, unfortunatley we were not really dressed appropriately for the place, but what the heck...was an amazing meal, easily our best on Savaii. By the time we got back to our resort, we were suitably knackered, but managed a beer or 2 before bed!

On Tuesday, we still had the car till midday so we got up early and headed north back to see the turtles, we expected this to be a really expensive, well set up tourist trap, but we were wrong - it was a family who owned basically an enormous pond extended from the river, where they kept the turtles, it was deep enough that we could get in and have a swim with them. Unfortunately it was chucking it down with rain at the time so the visibility wasn't great, but it was still pretty cool, and a great opportunity to use my underwater camera. After that we headed back to drop off the car and then lounged by the pool for a few hours. That afternoon, Elizabeth had arranged for us to have a tour of a local village. Was a great tours, led by one of the members of the village, she took us to her home which was incredible, it was very outdoor, open plan living with a different hut as a different room of the house, she also took us into her plantation, where her son Ien showed us how he fetched the coconuts for the family, climbing to the top in less than 10seconds - phenomenol. That evening, we decided to try out a different resaurant on the island, which didn't turn out to be all that great, but good trying a different place anyway.

Wednesday we had a lazy day by the pool, good weather and a good book was all I wanted, and it delivered on both of those. That evening we went on a little trip to one of the plantations where they showed us all the different fruit and veg they grow and how they work and live in the plantations, really interesting and some lovely people.

Thursday was our last day on Savaii and Elizabeth invited us to her village for the day. She lives in a village about 3 down from the resort. Her story is really interesting, she was born and brought up in Sydney, but her father is Samoan, she always dreamt of heading back to Samoa for a simpler life. About 1 year ago when she was 28 she headed over and in less than a year she has settled into Island life and married a Samoan man (who played professional rugby in New Zealand before heading home to look after his widowed mum) cute story really and a fascinating couple. There home is amazing, and every night they go to their beach fale to sleep, imagine waking up every morning on the beach with a view of the lagoon....awesome! So, after spending the afternoon on their beach, we headed back to our resort for a fia fia night which all the staff put on for us, complete with Samoan dancing and the national fire dancing champion performing for us, oh and a barbeque and cocktails!

On Friday we got up early and headed down to the wharf to catch our ferry back to Upolo, the main island, unfortunately, although the weather was nice, the sea was rough, and there were alot of sick passengers on board......However, I did get to see a whale which was pretty cool! After arriving on Upolo, we caught to bus to Apia to Aggie Greys, the most famous hotel on Samoa, and I think we were the youngest people there by at least 20years! That afternoon we headed into town to buy a few bits and pieces before grabbing our snorkels and heading to the deep sea marine reserve. This was really cool, visibility was good and there were so many fish! Got a little over excited with the underwater camera there! That evening we found a really nice restaurant down the road and made a bit of an evening of it, before heading back to our hotel room in time to watch the All Black thrash the Wallabies in another awesome rugby match.

Sunday we woke up to rain - we attempted to find the bus to take us to the sliding rocks but then the storm blew in. A proper tropical storm - we got absolutely soaked on our return back to the hotel and didn't manage to make it out at all. Not a great end to the holiday but never mind, We managed to have a lovely last meal that night before heading to the airport at 11pm for our flight home. Unfortunately, we didn't think our flights through properly and had arranged to arrive back in Auckland at 4.30am in time to drive down to Hamilton to start work at 8am. Obviously not thought through, especially since our flight was delayed, our shuttle bus didn't turn up and I ended up an hour late for work.....oh and to top it off, the person I was due to be with that morning was the boss....nice one Sallie, oh well what can you do.

So, all in all, a great holiday. Looking forward to the next one......in 2 weeks to Queenstown skiing - YEY!!!
